Browser-based audio plugins with WASM.

Thursday 16 July 2020

KoalaDSP is currently building the next generation of audio plugins: browser-based plugins, made with WASM!

WASM is the abbreviation of ‘WebAssembly’. It is a binary instruction format that allows us to run plugins in the browser, making use of the native processing power of the user’s machine. Before WASM, it was impossible to directly utilize the processing power of the user’s machine, and the options of doing browser-based audio processing were extremely CPU intensive and therefore limited. This has now changed. WASM allows us to take plugins and perhaps even full music production DAWs to the browser and make full use of the benefits of the cloud.

We are very excited about the opportunities that WASM offers for taking music production software to the browser:

  • – Enabling complex audio processing in the browser.
  • – Simplifying sales conversion by offering online plugin demo’s.
  • – Simplifying plugin licensing and online collaboration.
  • – Enabling the gathering of plugin usage data.

Please get in touch with us if you want to know how we can utilise the power of WASM for your company!
